Wow, he certainly is very prolific.

Jason is a really nice guy, and seems to have good intentions for the most part.

I've not been to his church, so I can't speak to that matter, but I certainly understand the 'cult' atmosphere you speak of. Half of my family is part of the extremely fundamentalist "United Pentecostal Church." All the women wear ankle-length skirts, my grandmother hasn't cut her hair since birth, and my grandparents still don't have television.

The worst UPC denominations are borderline-amish.

As flawed as Jason's reasoning might be, he is a fair debating partner. I doubt this is the last time we'll cross paths.

Hey Derek
Nice. I had almost the same experience. With the same youth pastor actually. I was convinced by my girlfriend at the time to attend the "City Heights Church Youth Group" (It wasn't actually called that. I forget the real name), and met Jason there. The experience of attending that meeting had the most galvanizing effect on my beliefs I can imagine. The cultish atmosphere scared me from being mostly ambivalent religion to significant activism against it. I'm going to be out of town for the BBQ, but I look forward to talking with you in the fall.

*turn on english accent*

"He was a charlatan, and bully, and fraud"

*turn off english accent*

I loved it went Hitchens said he doubted that Falwell could read any long book at all haha. It's so rare that truly objective (and atheistic) views are expressed in politics and the media in general, especially if they portray religious fundamentalism in a bad light.

*note to self: buy a copy of 'God is Not Great' =)

You really see the negative in everything, don't you Brad?

To me, your views are typical of today's fear of progress and advancement in science and in knowledge.

Every new announcement - even at a conceptual stage - is met with dire warnings about how this is all going to kill us, or how we humans have no business in "meddling" in a certain area.

Imagine the ramifications if it were used FOR humanity. We know there may be dangers, but we just have to guard against them and weigh that against the huge possible benefits.

Risk plays a big part in human advancement - it always has done. Fear of hypothetical dangers leaves us stagnant and backwards, it's not something we can afford to do.
